1. Matt McGee’s “Actually, We Don’t Think Google Hates HARO Links.”
Matt McGee’s post comes on the heels of Bill Hartzer’s “Google Flags Help A Reporter Out, Press Release as Bad Links.”
SEOs have been on eggshells since Google’s spam team handed out manual penalties to sites with low quality guest blogging links. Hartzer’s post seemed to indicate bad press links would be next, but both Matt McGee and Danny Sullivan were quick to defend HARO. If you’re involved in SEO and link building, you need to read both of these posts yourself.
2. Jason Acidre’s “How to Really Rank in Google’s SERPs.”
With Penguin’s punishment of over-optimized links (quit spamming those money keywords), SEOs have been examining other ranking factors. In this post Jason covers the ranking power of co-occurrence, using his own blog as a real life example. It’s fascinating stuff, and worth your time.
3. Rand Fishkin’s “Queries and Clicks May Influence Google’s Results More than Previously Suspected.”
Speaking of other ranking factors, Rand Fishkin, former CEO of Moz, has taken it upon himself to start a club dedicated to testing Google’s algorithm. In this post he examines the influence clicks have on a given SERP. Using his social media following Rand is able to drive ~250 clicks through Google to his page within a specific SERP, whereas the day before it only had 7. The result? Rand’s page quickly jumps up to the #1 spot. Correlation doesn’t equal causation but nevertheless it’s fairly compelling, and worth discussion.
4. Paddy Moogan’s “Link Prospecting the Efficient Way with Buzzmarker for Chrome.”
BuzzStream’s BuzzMarker has been reinvented as a Chrome extension, and Paddy Moogan was quick to cover the uses for link prospecting. This is a robust guide to using this new Chrome extension for prospecting, and covers a variety of possibilities. If you’re managing a large link building team it’s definitely worth a look.
5. Jon Cooper’s “Scalable Link Building Campaigns, Processes and Workflows.”
Jon Cooper also wrote a monster post explaining the various processes and workflows that BuzzMarker (and BuzzStream) help him with in a link building campaign. This is a long, in depth post giving away many of Cooper’s work processes. If link building is on your agenda at all, this post is definitely worth your time.
6. Jon Ball’s “4 Reasons Nofollowing All Links is Absurd.”
If you’re at all current with SEO trends, you know about Matt Cutts infamous blog post against guest blogging for SEO. Since the manual action against MBG, sites have been scrambling and debating whether to nofollow all guest post links. This isn’t a new trend in the industry – Google comes out against a specific tactic, and suddenly talk of nofollows is fast and thick. Jon Ball tackles why this trend can’t continue forever, and why nofollowing all links is absurd.
7. Josh Bachynski’s “Confessions of a Black Hat.”
Josh Bachynski is an SEO with an Ethics background, including a Bachelor’s, a Masters, and half a PHD. This post is all about the Ethics of Google, their algorithm, and their manual actions taken against “spammers”. Furthermore, it’s based on a recent interview Josh had with Matt Cutts himself. This should be on every SEOs read list.
